Triple-A: Charlotte Knights 9, Norfolk Tides 5 - Game 1 - F/7

Adley Rutschman smacked his first Triple-A home run as part of a 3-for-4 game, although the solo shot was his lone RBI. Jahmai Jones also left the yard for the ninth time this year, and Tyler Nevin added a double. Yusniel Diaz singled, and both Robert Neustrom and Zach Jarrett walked.

It was’t Kevin Smith’s finest day on the bump. He used 74 pitches to get through 4.1 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. But it was the long ball that hurt him as all four runs came on four one-run homers. Dusten Knight maintained the lead over his two-thirds of an inning, but Hunter Harvey couldn’t do the same as he allowed the tying run to score on three singles and a groundout. But it was Manny Barreda that took the loss as he served up a walk-off grand slam to Mikie Mahtook to conclude the Tides’ loss.

Triple-A: Charlotte Knights 6, Norfolk Tides 5 - Game 2 - F/8

Rylan Bannon’s bat stayed hot with another home run, his 10th on the year, and he also stole a base. The recently-demoted Ryan McKenna left the yard for the sixth time at Triple-A this season and added a triple during his 3-for-4 performance. Neustrom was 2-for-4 with a double, while Jones took an 0-for-3.

Mike Baumann started on the mound but would need 39 pitches to record just three outs as he allowed two runs on three hits, two walks, and zero strikeouts, an unfortunate setback for the promising young pitcher. Thomas Eshelman came on to give up two runs in two innings, and then Dean Kremer had the best outing of any O’s pitching, delivering three scoreless innings while striking out two. Felix Bautista blew the one-run lead when he allowed a run on three hits in the seventh, and Nick Vespi was saddled with the loss as he allowed the zombie runner on second base to score in the eighth inning for another walk-off loss.

Double-A: Bowie Baysox vs Reading Fightin’ Phils - PPD

Rain washed away this game. It will be made up on August 21 as part of a doubleheader.

High Single-A: Wilmington Blue Rocks 10, Aberdeen Ironbirds 6

None of the Aberdeen hitters went deep, but they did hit a trio of doubles: one each from Gunnar Henderson, Cristopher Cespedes, and a rehabbing Terrin Vavra. Henderson added a stolen base and a walk to further fill up the box score on his 1-for-3 night. Cespedes, Jean Carmona and Doran Turchin all had multi-hit nights. Hudson Haskin took a 1-for-4.

There really was not any good news to be found on the pitching side of things. Zach Peek was hit around over 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. Connor Gillispie may have had the best day of any IronBirds hurler as he went four innings and gave up two runs while striking out five, but he also coughed up the lead.

Low Single-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 3, Fredericksburg Nationals 1

Delmarva were the lone winners down on the farm on this night. The lineup had just five hits, all singles. Darell Hernaiz had two, while Colton Cowser, Coby Mayo, and Mason Janvrin had one each. They also worked six walks as a group and struck out just six times.

The Shorebirds pitching staff was effective despite struggling to miss bats. As a group, they struck out just four hitters, but also allowed only five hits and one walk. Ty Blach tossed two scoreless. Jensen Elliott threw four zeros on the board. And both Daniel Federman and Preston Price got through a clean frame each.

Complete box scores from all of Wednesday’s games can be found here. The Orioles’ Dominican Summer League teams did not play any games while the FCL Orioles Orange lost 9-5 to the FCL Twins. Box score for that game here.
